Buying a car is often the second largest expense in a person’s life, after buying a house, and it can be a real minefield trying to find the best deal.
Luckily, the Internet makes it a lot easier to find the best deals on cars for sale, with car traders from outside your area, for instance, with whom you wouldn’t normally have contact, often having an online presence, widening the choice immensely.
There are lots of things to look out for when buying a car. It’s a good idea to take a mechanically minded friend with you to look at the car, to give it the once over. Remember to check everything that’s electrically operated - electric windows, electric sunroof, for instance, and check that things like windscreen wipers, clocks, lights and heater fans work properly - this can all be done very easily from the driver’s seat. Carpets are another area that show wear and tear on a car, have a look under the mats to see if there are any holes in the carpets; if there are, and the mileage is low, it may have been clocked (the mileage wound back).
It’s also a good idea to check for rust under the wheel arches, and back and forth play in the wheels. Its advisable to get a car with some service history - at least a few MOT certificates should be present. A low mileage is normally a good thing, but is it realistically low for the year? Service history and MOT certificates normally record the mileage at the time, so are a good place to check to see if the car has been clocked.
